What Is an Austrian Vignette?

An Austrian motorway vignette (Autobahnvignette) is a mandatory toll sticker required for driving on Austrian motorways and expressways. Without a valid vignette affixed to your windscreen, you risk a substantial on-the-spot fine. ASFINAG offers several vignette options to suit different travel needs. The digital vignette (digitale Vignette) has been available since 2018 and is now the primary format, though physical stickers remain available at border crossings and petrol stations.

Where to Buy

Vignettes can be purchased through several channels. The digital vignette is available via the official ASFINAG website and the ASFINAG App, where you register your vehicle's licence plate. Physical stickers are sold at petrol stations, ÖAMTC and ARBÖ offices, post offices, and at border crossing points throughout Austria.

How to Affix the Physical Sticker Correctly

If you purchase a physical vignette, correct affixing is mandatory. The sticker must be placed on the inside of the windscreen, in the upper left corner (from the driver's perspective), or behind the rear-view mirror. It must be clearly visible from outside the vehicle.

1. Clean the windscreen area with a dry cloth.
2. Peel off the backing paper carefully.
3. Press firmly onto the glass — do not use intermediate surfaces.
4. Do not remove and re-affix; this invalidates the sticker.

Fines & Enforcement

ASFINAG operates automated detection systems (cameras) on motorways that scan licence plates and cross-reference them with the digital vignette database. For physical stickers, patrol officers verify compliance visually. The on-the-spot fine for driving without a valid vignette is €120. If the matter proceeds to a formal administrative procedure, fines can reach up to €3,000.

Exemptions & Special Cases

Certain roads, vehicles, and situations are exempt from the vignette requirement. Electric vehicles registered in Austria are exempt from the annual vignette fee (though not from special tolls on specific sections). Motorcycles require a separate, lower-priced vignette. Emergency vehicles, military vehicles, and vehicles with special permits are also exempt.
